Control Your Life and Emotions: “Dear Burt” Volume 38 109

Hi Friends,
I thought I would devote this Dear Burt edition on a more important subject about using your mind and gaining more control in your life.
I wanted to teach you something you have probably never read or heard of before but it’s a very effective technique to control your emotions.
Speaking of which, in the video below, you will see one of my latest paintings behind me. It is an abstract piece I did a few weeks ago and I designed it to elicit emotions from you. This actually goes in line with the topic I am about to speak of.
When you look at the painting, I want you to be honest about what you see. Not everyone sees the same thing and there are no right answers. Most importantly, I want to know what emotions emerge from you when you look at the painting. I’d really like your feedback on this.
Back to my definition of emotion. An emotion is any thought with a like or dislike attached to it. The more you like or dislike something, the more emotional you become.
From the moment we were born, we've been a slave to our emotions. Emotions have always played a big role in our life. They are active and alive 24 hours a day, even in our dreams. Emotions literally tell us what to do with our marriage, family, job, career, self, and how we love others.
However, there are times when we need to rein these feelings in and learn how to control emotions especially if they are not healthy for us.
Are you allowing emotions to control your life? If the answer is yes, then I may have the solution for you.
A while ago, I developed a technique related to the location of emotion and how shifting that location can help us control our emotions better.
Listen to this video and do the exercise that I’m about to teach you.

You can do this while thinking about anything. Once you get used to using this location technique, you can have better control on the emotions in your life. You can start with something simple, like altering your emotion attached to a particular food.

As you know by now, I really value your feedback. Let me know the results you got from this special technique. Please leave your comments.

And depending on how you feel about this technique, I just might do a second one next week so stay tuned!

Sincerely,

Burt

Dear Burt,
You are so right, this really makes sense to me, and it works, thank you so much, I'm looking forward to the next video.
As for your picture, I love it, I see so many things in it, a few are a pair of sunglasses, a fish, shoe, water, chair, part of a house, I think it's so great, it's like a story in the picture.
You are amazing, thank you so much for all you share.

I see the cannon fodder and the lake (along with an entire forestscape), which there is also a house beside. However, Napolean is one I seem to miss. That's a very interesting painting, though Burt. Abstraction is one of my favorite elements of painting.

Sis says

Well Burt...can't say that I "Like" this painting. My very first thought was "CHAOS". As I continued to view it..it appears to me that there is a house, a road, a person being silenced by a red "something or another"...and general..as i said.."Chaos" surrounding everything. Not one of my favorites that you have done. BUT...as people have said of me that there is nothing that i say or do that does not have meaning or a purpose..I feel the same about you! So, it MUST have meaning and a purpose! As for your Video, please talk more on the "clock" subject. That is one of your Best!! Thank you, and as Always..Big hugs to you and your family!

HI: Just listened to your location video. I thought it was great. And I've just had a few days of emotions. Just wish I'd seen it earlier.

dear burt, i've been experiencing alot of anger towards my boss and a mechanic friend of mine this past week that it was consuming me . my emotions were almost taking me over. your technique to help with this came into my path, so going to try it. will let you know how it goes. thank you for your wisdom.

Dear Burt,
i know how to enerjice water, but how do enerjice a Qurts neklis; do you do it like water are is there a beter way to inerjice a quorts neklis?

meg says

Yes Burt
... more on controlling our emotions, which to me seem to waste so much of my time and energy. I will try it at night when my thoughts will not stop. Now I've heard it said that when you have that tossing and turning and your mind will not stop that you are in a toxic physical state. Is there a way to apply this controlling our emotions tecnieque, or any other, to detox our physical bodys while we sleep instead of the tossing and turning to neuro chatter? I find that when I am experiencing this I have all kinds of little ticks and discomforts pop up all over my body. Thank you for your help. Love your painting it reminds of a dream where you have to desend many stairs underground to get to your destination - funny underground lighting effect - I like it very much. Thanks Meg

Dear Burt,

Karen says

I like the painting - it is a jungle scene, with a wet road that reflects the sunset behind. The flashing leaves catching the light and the darkness of a well-lived day.

I also appreciate the location technique. I use a "clock" as driving directions for complicated intersections. One always enters the intersection at the 6:00 position, and exits toward the number that takes you in the direction you plan to go. Now I have a new use for the clock image. Thank you!

hi burt , i am not sure, its interesting, it looks all muddled up, the dangerous red color and the black i dontreally like they make me afraid of something/someone intense around me, i also see a cute building which shows me my situation of where im located round people and things i am not open too, but i feel the picture also shows a lovely escape in to the beautiful sunrise, its mixed but funky, i like it as art but i prefer softer less entertaining pictures, thanks burt is great to know u teresa x,

Dear Burt,
I'm just in the first steps but I’m already in love about all the insights. As an artiste, sharing your Quantum Jumping is like to start the essential lessons of knowing the path's full names to fulfill the multiple ways to come home. Thanks and thanks and thanks.

Sandra says

Thanks for the video Burt,it is always great to hear something new and fresh. What your painting looks like to me is a painting of quantum jumping. The darker colors around the edges are ordinary(like our every day life)and the bright center of the painting is like a window opening into an alternate universe. I am drawn into the center of the painting to a horizon. there is peace and and some kind of knowledge waiting there.

deepa says

well!!! I see your painting is full of anger... RED chillies paintings... I dont know what is your thinking behind this painting but I really think this is enough to make a person anger.. but I like ur vedio and thnks to you for your valuable advice..

The painting reminded me of a forrest with a red river running through it. There was a lot of energy in the painting and while I didn't preceive it as negative energy, it made me a little uncomfortable. The painting was not a place I want to spend much time in.

I enjoyed today's lesson. It's very easy to do and I feel that it will be effective. Thank you for helping me see it in a new way.

Randa Fox says

Hi Burt!

This is the second or third video that I have listened to for the first time. The first one you were discussing Intention which strikes the core of my belief.

The next one was about Vibration. My husband was a mechanical engineer and he understood so much about energy (he loved reading about Nikalai (sp?) Tesla)....Vibration and attitude, vibration and healing, just the beauty and power of vibration.

Gaining control of emotions was what I just watched. My husband died 3/16/09 at 1:52 pm. I am growing a little stronger every day, but am still amazed when I get blindsided by life. Trying to learn who to trust - learning to stand strong. I really like using the clock to assign people I like, people I don't like, and people I am unsure of to a specific time. 12 Noon was immediately for people I trust and like. 8 o'clock went to people I am unsure of and 3 o'clock was reserved for people I haven't met yet and have neutral feelings. I really liked the visualization as a way to gain some small level of sorting through my emotions.

I would like to see your painting in person. At first I felt unsettled. Then as I let my see it not just with my eyes but my heart, I realized that the green, red, and black jungle type place on the left represented the journey I have been traveling (confusing, unsure, directionless, angry) - the path I come from.
The opposite side with the sunset type colors that almost opens up and feels welcoming is the path I am heading toward. And maybe am already there. I really appreciate your time.

Many Thanks,
Randa Fox

Mary says

Greetings Burt,

Your painting on emotions matches the floodgates that emotions are responsible for people having.

What stood out for me were the letters h that is embedded in a house and the j is part of the peaceful lake with reflections in the lake yet also attached to what looks like a dog within the dog is the peaceful clouds reminded of the daisy pond. To the left I still see your palm trees with birds, pelicans on the right side looking into the lake. Within the rain forest there is a port hole created together with the birds trees. This port hole has someone taking a quantum jump on the start of the journey.

I get the movie, because you see more and more within the picture.

Amazing helps with utilizing your own imagination.

Thanks Burt

Dar Burt,

I think this is a great technique and would like to develop it further, so I want more on the subject of controlling your emotions with your mind~ On your painting I find it very interesting-- I see and escape into the sunset from some sort of chaos/action.

Dear Burt,

Thank you for sharing such a a simple technique. I plan to try it right away. Will get back to you with the result.

In your painting I see a house [orange] with a white door
and red fruit hanging from trees. Also some water around the house.

You may be interested to know that my husband also dabbles in art and usually paints abstract forms.

Take care and keep sharing

Hi Burt, I did not feel comfortable in your painting. I felt confused and as if I were looking for a way out. It seemed there was an "escape portal" but I was not sure of that space either since the color there was so intense. So I backed up from your painting and chose to experience it from the outside. The smaller it got in my vision the more I could appreciate it as a work of art and began to think of it in the manner you were speaking of in your video piece. the further away from it the more comfortable I was with it. Or maybe a better way to put it is the further away from it the less emotion I felt about it. Great exercise! thanks! Jeanett

Bonnie Pura says

Dear Burt:
Thank you for your continued output of artwork and easily applicable techniques for adding ease into our lives. You're the greatest!

Just a comment on the painting: Initially it brings to mind a hot heart...full of turmoil and fire! I was surprised to say you had veered from your forest paintings because it reminds me of a forest that has taken upon itself the job of dissipating the excess fire of the heart in the center, and as a result elements of the fire have caught in the trees and are still smoldering there. The heat has pushed a series of domesticated animals into visibility reminding me of the serenity of our essential nature.

Like the painting...reminds me of my son...

Thanks,
Bonnie

You have a wonderful mind, and to care enough to share it with us is great. We are so fortunate to have you teaching us. Burt, I want to know why we (this world) has allowed (the need for money) to be front and center in this life. I can't believe my life, the entire focus, the thing I must concentrate on,the thing I must constantly do to exist is all about money. Really , is that why I was born-to live in a world to give money to other people, and to make money for myself so I can give to others as they give to me. Where is the life I was meant. Is money why I was given breath. Is money all there is to life? I need to know.

Hi Burt,
Yesterday I was going back through my Healing-Triangle course again and was reading more abut the emotion control technique and I must say this is a very helpful technique and I am already getng great results from it too.
I highly recommend the Healing-Triangle to everyone. It is simple and very powerful too.

Thanks Burt and see you next Friday,

Hi Burt, I've been following you for awhile and find your stuff really NEAT. I've studied NLP, and HUNA and hypnosis and especially SUPERLEARNING with BAROQUE music (I'm a musician) and been guided to see the PURE POWER in music. I don't ever try to catagorise you as, NLP or HUNA or whatever, like some of the comments I read. I want to let you know THANKS for a great job and the simplicity in your delivery speaks a lot about how long you've been at this. I've only studied for 23 years so I can see the experience you lend to us all.GREAT!!! Oh, is this were I start my diatribe about GOD???? Guess not. with regards Gary

Hi Burt,

Your painting reminded me of a jungle with frightening person's in the backround and a house with a large road to freedom and peace at the edge. A pathway from chaos to a new and beautiful place.

Thanks for the emotional technique, you are always so kind in what you share and give so freely, may God alway's reward you.

Many Blessings,

This picture is paticularly soothing as it gives one lots of options to choose your opinions of it.This can take some time for me it did.Whilst this was going on I had no other thoughts which to me is a form of medidation. For those moments and the the time it took to actually decide what was painted I relaxed and enjoyed the moments.Suffice to say I havn't come to a conclusion as to exactly what it is, because to me it represents a period of medidation, which will be used again and again.Thank you

Thank you , Burt!

Mikael says

Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

We must remember not to take your big effort for granted.

You named this Positions technique as one of your favorite of your own techniques along side with Bagha and Center Stage.

I have won with slot machines couple times with this technique after spotting my winning position (it's about 4 - 5 o'clock for me).

About magical Bagha... I wanted to go for a bank and I was pretty late, bank was about to be closed. I used Bagha Duo before I went to drive to bank and visualized myself just on time before the bank is closed. Incredibly allmost all lights where green when I drived. I run to bank. Man who was about to close door was talking with elderly woman. If I would have got 10 seconds later to bank, I wouldn't have made it. Incredible. I love my life, it's great to experience these kind of magical things.

The painting: first I saw upper part presenting unbalance and chaos and down part with river and lake presenting balance and harmony. But then when I saw the painting for longer, it was more clearer:

There is obviosly forest, river, lake and hilarious, enthuastic, excited and little bit chaotic pelican group flying somewhere.

Rosemary says

I'm pretty new with your program, so let me start with what I saw in the painting: A duck at the top staring down at the reddish river, surrounded by folliage. Because it is late spring, the birds are out in force, chirping, flying and otherwise presenting a liberating, joyful scene. Near my office is a detention basin (part of the flood control system in Sparks, NV), with American Avocets, killdeer, red-winged blackbirds and yellow-headed blackbirds. When I am feeling stressed by the vicissitudes of the real estate business, a walk over to that area brings relief and happiness.

I have not had time yet to try your method, but it makes some sense. My emotions generally lie in my throat or in my heart. Not sure how to make them go "out there" onto a clock, but at least the idea is there.

Thank you,
Rosemary

Hello Burt,

This was really very interesting. I am going to try this method. I thought of a person whom I don't care about too much and did put her in the 11 o'clock position and when I moved her to the 6 position I actually felt better. I am going to try this method this week. I can always count on you on Friday to learn something new. Let's have tea next week or maybe a glass of water. Toast to YOU for being such inspiration. Thank YOU!!!!

Dear Burt:
I don't know if you can help me or not, but I am a very emotianal person.

I don't know if it is because of what happened when I grew up with sexual abuse by my two brothers, violence in the home and then being abused by a husband and then being bullied at work.

Do you have any ideas how I can make myself stronger to the point that I don't break down and be able to control my emtions.

Interesting how that happens - how what's going on in your life influences the things you see in abstraction -

Also love the instruction for shifting emotions!! Will use it for sure!!!!

Thanks again, Burt, for the illumination.I definitely would like to hear more on controlling one's emotions. As to your painting. The first couple of seconds that I saw it I felt a twinge of fear. I believe it was due to the colors. But then I saw a giant red pepper forest with a house next to a river during the setting sun. Very intersting.

Drena says

In your abstract painting I see a chaotic situation, indicated by the varied shapes and darker colors, with a path leading into a happy solution, indicated by the smooth shapes and bright, warm colors. I also see a fish on the left side, and to me a fish seems to say, "Look how easily I move along in my environment, letting it flow through me and being at one with it."

Very interesting method. Unfortunately all people seem to be straight in front of me, regardless if I like or dislike them, except for my partner who is in my arms. I am totally inable to visualize...

Im going to start using it in my life..
As for the painting, i want it, lol..
What I see are two different paths, one in a forrest full of trees, plenty of places to go for cover. and the other out in the open, no protection from the sun, no where to hide, just completely vulnerable. Yet beautiful at the same time and i want to walk on that path to see where it goes...
thank you so much for all you do..

Betina Campbell says

Hi Burt, I'm understanding what you're saying but I just have a couple of questions. If I can control my emotions through practicing this, do you think I could temporarily switch positions with my emotions when it comes to healing family members. Could I put them in neutral and then go into meditation for healing? Then switch them back to the like/love position? At the moment it doesn't feel possible for me but I don't doubt that it can work. I just find it difficult to go neutral for the ones I love when it comes to healing them. I try to think neutral but sometimes in a healing, I'll cry and I'm not sure exactly why. Anyway, sorry it's so long. I have questions coming out of my ears. Thanks for everything, Betina

Kafi says

Hi Burt, I will use this technique on controlling my emotions. I think it will be very useful in controlling my mind.

I saw in the painting a fork in the road. To the right the road was bright and sunny with beautiful trees and a wonderful lake. To the left the road was dark and gloomy and scary with snakes hidden in the trees. I wouldn't want to travel the road on the left.

Marilyn R Williams says

Hello Burt - Thank you for another useful tip! I do have someone from the past I'd like to neutralize and now I know how :)

When I first saw the painting, it looked like a forest fire to me. Then I looked at for a while to see what emotions I felt and mostly they were ones around escaping, and being grateful there was an escape route. The escape route is the river flowing towards a gorgeous sunset and an area that is safe because it has already burned. The action in the painting comes from other life forms fleeing and the flames rushing through. It reminds me of the story of the Phoenix - what seems bad isn't always bad.

Will practice your technique to neutralize those from the past that still haunt me - since it's an answer to a question I've had and doesn't involve violence! :)

Thank for your insight and guidance! Love and appreciation,
Marilyn

Laura Schiller says

What I liked about this process was the power such a simple action of moving a feeling from one location to another was for me. Very empowering. Just taking the responsibility of making the decision to move it had the relief that was desired. I kind of got caught up at first in wondering whether I was the clock or the clock was facing me but when I realized it wasn't necessary to move it to a specific place but just moving it, got me the results. Thanks.

Fred Miller says

I developed a crude version of this some years ago before I discovered you. Every day, I had to walk past the office of a very unpleasant co-worker. I knew I needed some kind of shield. What I did was to focus on the doorknob of an unused (neutral) door at the end of the hall. Thus, I developed a habit of switching my attention from negative to neutral. Unfortunately, it worked only in that hallway. Your technique is an improvement on mine because it can be used anywhere in any surrounding.

Burt,

Concepcion Calderon says

Dear Burt,
Thank you for this technique. I have not used it yet, so I cannot give you my feedback, but it sounds interesting because of its simplicity and it reminded me of a Math professor I had at the University. After giving us a problem to be solved for homework, he solved it the next day. We generally had been able to solve it in eight or nine steps. He needed only two steps, and the solution seemed so obvious that we thought. "Why didn?t I think of that?". So I will try it.

About the painting, I see a forest with many trees and a road, leading to a sunny spot. I also see music.

I hope you don't think I'm too crazy.
Love,
Concepcion

Dear Burt:

I enjoyed your viedo clip on controlling emotions. However, I am not able to develop the positioning of my emotions (likes and dislikes and being netural). I need big time help in this area. Can you elabarate on positiong the emotions? As always thanks for all that you do.
Best, VJ

Florina says

This is wonderful! Thank you! It is interesting how (at least in my case) the “like” position seems to be the same for everything, while the “dislike” or “neutral” position seems to change as a function of the object of my emotion! Anyway…I wish I could share this with my close family (mother and brother, which don’t speak English); they let intense emotions run their lives far too often…Have you ever thought of collaborating with somebody to translate your courses / seminars in other languages?

Cheers! :)

Simple technique and very sound. Seems like some of the NLP techniques that I have learned in the past. Good job Burt!

I hope you don't mind, but I found your picture disturbing. Before you started mentioning what other people saw in the painitng, it just upset me. After a bit more study, it was still upsetting, but less other worldly (I saw the horse head , I saw what I interpret as a house and a road).

As for the technique--I'll need to practice it some more. Right now I'm still in the phase where it seems too easy to work. Thanks for sharing this.

Dear Burt,
It's me again with a question. How can I share this blog with my friends and relatives? I sent my sister the link to your blog ysterday and when I went into check if she had gotten the blog, I clicked on the link I had put up and found out it went onto the link ok and youcould read the text but there were no videos but blank saces. So what is the best way to share these with other people.

Thank You,

Nice message, thanks.
The painting looks to me like an emotional soup of all kinds of likes and dislikes!
Happy day!

Hi Burt,
I have several of your programs PDQ 1 and 2, the Properity Program. I find your material some of the simplesst and silliest around. But I love it because it is so simple and pushes your imagination and creativity to try things that you would otherwise not think of since we are so conditioned into patterns. It really works. You have to be willing to play around and experiment with it.

Thank You,
Nicolas

Excellent thoughts sir :)

Invariably because of time constraints I am unable to go through much of your wonderful thoughts. But this 10 minute vid was beautiful :)

Perhaps you could have one 10 minute segment per week to sum up the best lessons you have shared (and gained from feedback) for that week... then even ole 'time constrained' chaps liek me won't have an excuse :)

Thank you again, very much so

Dear Burt, thank you for sharing so much with us!
That is an amazing little technique, easy and quick but definitely very effective. Now part of my "tool box".
The easiest things mostly are the best working things, and can be done at any time and everywhere.

I love your painting! For me, I see a smooth, peaceful magic lake in the center of an abundance of plants and red flowers, the lake reflecting a glowing sunset,
and a couple of birds, which makes me feel calm and peaceful, emotional freedom.

Thank you
Sabine

I liked your painting, it looked like a tropical scene to me, I saw a house and exotic birds or flowers. I had a positive reaction to it, as for the clock, I will try it, but I don't think I truly understand or believe it will work. But I am open to suggestion, and that's a good thing.

Sabina says

Hi Burt
Thank you for that wonderful teaching!! i have encountered a similar technique many many many years ago, but I guess I haven't needed to use it for a good while. I will however "borrow" it from you and will pass your website on to some young people I'm in a class with.
RE the painting: My first impression was that of a place of peace that could only be gotten to by going through some physical pain. I just had Major oral surgery about
12 hours ago during which a lot of old metal and dead roots and non-functional tissue were removed, I'm sure this has a great deal to do with my first impression.
I strongly disliked the painting but applied your teaching and now feel quite nutral about it.

To be honest Burt, I really could not get a hang of what you were trying to convey, maybe like you said it was lack of time. Its really not really so easy to make things vanish the way you explained. Yes there is a way whereby you can substitute every negative thought with a positive one. Nevertheless, i shall try your technique and may be with a little practice i can get a hang of it. I am sure you must have researched this extensively before presenting it to us...But i liked your sincerety and genuine effort to relieve us of the various mental ills that plague mankind and hinder it from knowing the Divine. My very first impression of your painting was intense confusion "but", with a bright light in the distance that was at the end of a long river. It made me want to ignore the mass of confusion and travel down the river towards the bright light (possibly the white light). I very much liked your idea of using a clock for a place to put good and bad emotions. I tried it and found I could dislike my fav. butter crunch ice cream and like my hated anchovies. Very intuitive idea. I want to hear more! Thank you.

Great message, wonderful technique. Simple and it works. Now I am netural about onions...don't think I like them but netural anyway. This worked also worked on a family member I was angry at. I'm a bit in awe that I don't feel anything about her now. She is netural in my mind.

Thanks Burt, love your wisdom and appreciate your sharing!

I forgot to mention my comment about my picture.
the very first thought was negative but as soon as I saw a pathway in it, I liked it. also started to look very beautiful.

Thank you very much for spending your valuable friday morning time with us. I learnt a technique to control emotions. Like you said emotions are result of thoughts. So when I have negative emotions about something, I try to think the reasons for the negativity then think if this is worthy enough to change to positive or keep it neutral. and start thinking in that direction. this usually helps me change neg. to neutral or positive. The idea of a clock is brilliant way to explain.
Thank you
Sonia

That was a good one Burt!
It seems as though the self help gurus these days are teaching that emotions are the things that create your life ...but you took it one step further by teaching people how to control their emotions. Well done!

Hey, Burt!

Your painting elicits a feeling of focus, intentional, desirable recompense. I really enjoy the movement surrounding the still- well done, are you offering any print's? If so, I'll buy one! See ya,

Hi Burt: I like the idea of having more control over my likes and dislikes, it feels very empowering. I wonder how would I use this technique to get myself motivated to exercise? Self hypnosis, positive thinking and the like, thus far have not had lasting results. Thank you Burt.

Burt,
Your painting is beautiful and very expressive. I see a rain forest with a river going to a fiery sunset in the middle of exotic trees with many and various animals, birds, and snakes in them. The trees are very bright and colorful with what looks like red flowers or fruits coming off of them. It looks to be a very lush and abundant environment filled with wonder. The emotions it evokes for me are joy, wonderment, whimsy, curiosity, adventure, motivation, and abundance - a very positive energy. The river going to the fiery sunset makes me feel fired up about possibilities of the future and the river is kinda calm looking so it makes the path seem exciting and peaceful going to an unknown (curiosity and wonder and filled with possibility and hope), vibrant, energetic future. The rain forest is kinda fun and playful and adventurous. There is definitely a positive, inspiring energy to the painting. Amazingly creative and deep. The fact that the fiery sky of the future reflects in the river kinda expresses the Law of Attraction that one must be in alignment with the future now and be able to visualize it with energy. It also expresses an affluence consciousness because the rain forest seems to be overflowing with life and color. I love the exotic feel also it adds to the feeling of excitement and adventure. It seems to evoke more and more thoughts as I continue to absorb the vibration it brings. Thank you for this positive inspiration to my day. Blessings!
