Howth Harbor 242

For those of you who know me well, you know I have a very unique photography style. I can’t be certain, but I am quite sure that no other artist is using my concept of creating art. The truth is, it all came to me during one of my Quantum Jumps and today I want to show you my latest masterpiece. It’s currently hanging over my mantle piece and I am pleased to say that when friends and family come over for a visit they can’t keep their eyes off of it!

I just couldn’t wait to share it with all of you.

Before I show it to you, however, I have a story you need to hear.

It was 1988 and I was in Ireland. I saw this old trawling vessel docked at Howth Harbor, a quaint fishing village on the outskirts of Dublin. The bow of the boat was crowded with fishermen, each with a pint of Guinness in hand. I pulled out my camera and took about a hundred photos of it. Once I returned home, I developed all the images put them together in a collage for a special showing at the International Photography Hall of Fame. After the showing I brought it home and put it in my garage where it laid forgotten for nearly 20 years.

Well… a few weeks ago I found it and got an amazing idea.

Here is what the piece looked like when I found it:

howth-harbor-original

I brought the piece into my studio and started painting on the old photographs. I painted a new sky and ocean then contrasted it with the weathered brown boards of the dock I remember so well. I touched up the boat and painted in new ropes. Before I knew it, I had a brand new piece of art right in front of me!

Here it is:

howth-harbor

I call it Howth Harbor. I hope you enjoy it.

Please let me know what you think!

Sincerely,

Burt

I think both are fantastic! The new, painted edition has a much more modern appearance to it — that’s saying a lot considering the overall collage style. It’s quite stark, and as Ida said, so very alive. I’m more drawn into it. I really enjoy free, disheveled looks in art, and implement such in my work from time to time…because I love to paint too, Burt! :) Thank you for all that you do. And one more thing: when I am looking at the picture it seems to me that I know you for a long time, and I like it

Burt … Nice job and I like what you were able to do with the “old photo”. Wouldn’t it be remarkable, if with a few brush strokes, we could take our “worn out life picture” and convert it into something so new and beautiful again. Oh, maybe be can. Tell me how.

Hello Burt:

Thanks for creating a forum where we can each express our thoughts on how we view changes. It is amazing to read everyone’s perspective. I think that your work shows your passion for life and your thoughts of reincarnation. As you stated in one of your lessons, we all have a double somewhere on another universe and you painting over an original, making it livlier, simply demonstrates this point.

Bat says

Well, I like new ideas and original ways to express creativity. So I really appreciate your style. From my point of view art is not meant to duplicate reality, it is meant to show people a better perspective on reality. And you’re doing that.
good job!

VenuGopal Linga says

Dear Burt, it is in your nature to give new life to downtrodden people suffering with problems and you have shown it now on your photograph.

Thanks for the pictures and lessons and comments about it. I like the heart that holds the boat also. Very nice experience.

Once I crawl out of this financial hole I’ve dug for myself, I want to get your course on quantum jumping. I’d love to jump out of here right now and onto that boat.

Lucy says

Wow! Its amazing how we can take something old and make it new again by letting a little time go by without paying much attention to it. Its like we get a new perspective to build on an old subject. I guess with time we gain wisdom to tackle old problems or projects with new and improved vision!

Zena says

Absolutely beautiful.

Cindy Chinchen says

Hi Burt
I have truly enjoyed your lessons but I must be totally honest
here. I know that everyone has their own idea of what is beautiful and artistic. I have to say that I really prefer the old photograph (painting). It is rustic and original. You do have talent though for restoration. I think that some things are just meant to be left alone to be admired. But then again it sounds like a lot of people prefer your new improved version.
I just have to say that I’m not one of those people. To each his own…
God Bless

Hello Mr. Goldman,

I found the painting to be very beautiful. So beautiful I thought it would be something to focus on while meditating, as it portrays a calming, peaceful, very blue coloring effect, yet you can still feel and hear the water slowly rushing against the boat. No gulls but another thing to complete the meditation.

Thank you so much for sharing something of old and recreating it to a new visible painting in every sense.

Vince says

Hi Burt
Thanks for your inspiration. I think the new version is far superior than the old although the old one is still good. The changes remind me of the saying that there is nothing new under the sun. By taking something old and adding something extra the old one becomes a better old one that’s new. The inspiration that you give reminds me that things we did in the past can be improved on by applying ourselves in the right way.

I like the first picture, it is soft and dreamy. I do not care so much for the second one. It is a little too harsh, which is good in some circumstances, but I don’t think so here. That doesn’t mean it is not good, just not MY ideal, but the first one is.

The picture is wonderful, and it has in a way empressionist style (it looks like that). Hi Burt
I think you did a great job on restoring the painting. Someone gave me a painting of a boat in 2000 and I painted on top of it with fabric paint. piece of abstract art.

chiquitahill says

Thank you for sharing your painting with me,I love the details you did in the picture. Now the picture is bright and clear. I draw also, and I know it is the details, style and freshness, that makes your picture look rich. The same way things are in our lives, you can change it if you want to. You just have to make up your mind, you want that change. I lost my house and I need one now. I don’t judge no one, because it’s no one fault, but my own. Now I will try to change my life, just like you change the dullness in the photo,to a bright new Painting. I want to do my life, the same way. I tell myself, life will get better and better. EVERYDAY. Things will open up, I feel it. Things change everyday and I still look for the positive in everything. Things usually happen when you lease expect it to, sometimes, so I’m drawing and adding a bright splash of color to my new life. I feel like I’m standing on the deck, walking toward the boat that’s all tied up. Nice, I know what it takes, and you did a good job.

Nora says

I loved the painting, as I have a passion for the ocean.

Saleema says

I find your piece very creative, although I prefer your photo collages. What I appreciate the most about you is the ability to draw the viewer’s attention from the banal perception of the physical senses into higher dimensions of perception. “Surrealism” is the stule I best associate your form of expression with.

Cheryl Torres says

Hello Burt what an idea! I beleive I could try something like that even though I am not an artist, or at all creative in that capacity. I would say you did take alittle of the (age of history)if I might describe it that way and made it something of a more modern time. Maybe not using such bright colors (as the red) on the boat and keeping the antiquish kinda quality to it. Keeping the spirit and “history” of that boats challenges and journeys alive, and yet knowing there is so much more to experience in the future. Marvellous art burt, reminding me of comic pictures of 40s’ and i love it

Danielle says

Beautiful sketch. I love your photo too. very creative.

Laine says

Bert,
I see that you did a fantastic job of restoring your painting. The colors are brighter, and yet still remnant of how they would have appeared many years ago. I hope you are having a wonderful day. Keep shining!

Celia says

I like this new painting very much specially the vivid
colors.

kevin says

P.A.C.E. You suck .Burt You Rock !

Cindy says

Very well done. The detail is totally awesome. Thanks for sharing!!!

EULAH D BENSON says

I love what you have done to the old photo, I would love to see the face of the person who owned this old boat when they would see what they could have if they took over a remodeling job. The picture is great.

Yesudas says

A metaphor of life. I would like some one to put some “new colourful paints” on my 62 year old form, the inner self being ever young. Ha ha.

Thanks Burt

Douglas Grigg says

Nice Illustration, yes. Masterpiece worthy of salivating kudos? Hmmmm. I don’t think so. What is with all these people who lavish over the top praise for what is a nice drawing with bright fun colors? I somehow think that the common denominator for what people consider fine art is in need of re-examination. Perhaps re-education. Burt, I love your enthusiasm, but can’t get on board with self proclaimed greatness when it comes to art.

eva says

Burt I don’t know much about “art” but I love the colors, it would brighten up any place it hangs.
It is warm and sunny with happy energy, you must be proud of having produced it.
I spent the afternoon reading your Mind Box series, there is so much you can be proud of, — thank you for sharing your wonderful mind with the rest of us.
God Bless!!! Keep up the great work, you are appreciated beyond words. EVA

Debbie Lewis says

Really nice, Burt. Love the bright colors! Thanks for sharing your creation.

Gary Clayton Ripley says

Hi Burt…

It’s always good to be encouraging, especially to
beginners.

But you’re not a beginner. So I must confess that
I see you as self conscious and left-brained here.
I believe that it’s called ‘object oriented’…
that’s where the artist is ‘up tight’ and afraid to
work ‘outside of the reference lines for fear of
loosing the ‘sterio-typical’ images…

Even so, your talent is showing…

But you could doing more important research..

Hey Burt — very cool. You really should clean out your garage more often! Obviously this was the right time for the original picture to “show up” and for you to embellish it.

Evil Jimmi says

That’s fantastic.

I must say your career as an artist has inspired me to follow through on a body of work I’ve been toying with for quite some time.

Thank you!

grace says

you did a great job. i am and artist myself and up in years, however this just adds juice to the feelings you have when you see a nice pease of work. thanks for sharing it with me.

Mr. Smith says

It’s nice to see the experimentation, but to be perfectly honest, I’m far more fond of the original piece. The composition is much more interesting to me, and the use of white space is intriguing. Always fun to put something in a new light, though! Art is an amazing thing :)

Lor says

I live near that area in Dublin, it’s an absolute pleasure seeing your masterpiece of a place so close, well done

Paul says

Nice work Burt. Wish I had that skill!

Jana says

Although I love the original one I have to say what a great idea to paint over it and create a new beautiful piece of art.
Thank you for sharing Burt.

Donald C Prior says

Don’t know what URL stands for, but the picture is my life time at sea, I’ve spent 35yrs @ sea, it seems to be a 65footer to me, used sometime for fishing, but the A frame or Gantry dosen’t show what kind of fishing this boat has done, Don.

Darleen says

I love this. Its amazing Wow! fabulous.

Anthony L. Gaudiana says

Accentuate the essence.
I’ve played with that in the photo shop, adjusting light focus, and saturation et.al. to soften the parameters of a physical object that has more definition than it needs for the message of substance that it emits.
Sometimes too critical a focus is a distracting element that focus’ the rational mindset to egotistical analytical observation mode that requires multi-tasking.
While softness and color vibrate directly to the chakras and serve to induce sensory memories of good experiences.
The transfer of focus to substance bypasses detail distraction.

That would of been cool if it were foggy, and some way you could tell their was a fog horn.

That color is congruent, the whole picture is.

esther says

having been to howth harbour both of your pictures resonate with me and perhaps there are many more “pictures” inbetween these two still to be captured I suppose it depends on our “eye” and our mood .thankyou for an interesting topic esther.

Gale says

I love that piece. I like the best of all the art you have posted in the past. This is my favorite.

Marsha says

I love the painting! Where my mind is going, too, is how could you get the paint to adhere to actual photographs & how can that be presereved? I would hate to see it crumble!

Marian Anderson says

Hi Burt,

All I can say is WOW and I am a bit of a boat freak and have worked on them, photographed them and painted them — but you beat me!?! Let us see more works, please.

MA

Racheal says

Hi Burt,
I must say that the painting is wonderfully done. My favorite part is the blend between sky and ocean. Having the ocean and sky comprised of similar colors helps the red boat to stand out boldly. I enjoyed it!

James Gichigi says

Thanks Its very inspiring and so real. carry on doing your good work. I expect you will get better and better as you folow your heart.
There is still hope for us who are aspiring for better expresion of our lives.
thanks again Bless you from the bottom of my heart.

Hi Burt!

Great perspective, nicely modeled forms.….i would suggest more experimentation with color instead of the narrower palette of ice-cold and hot color.….How about greens, yellows, purples, ochres, roses, orange…etc. They are always there, we just have to see them. Also the dock seems to rise and arch up rather then lie flat and move that way forward in space.

Very beautiful though!

robakyo says

I really like your brushwork. Another artist, painting from a photograph, discovered during a showing of the finished painting, that he had painted the model with an extra finger.
I truly don’t want to say this, but without the reflection of the boat in the water, the boat has no foundation. Were it to be floating in the air, we would see the keel. This boat is lopped off at the waterline.

Aloha,

Robakyo

Geoff says

Hi Burt,
“You are the dreamer and the dream manifesting the physical. You have certainly kept your childlike state of wonderment, joy, and what if’s.Never grow up for it stifles the magic.“Geoffrey.

Patricia A.C. Eppenbrock says

Good Afternoon Mr. Goldman,
Being a born Artist myself, I find that I am very critical of not only my own work but also those of others. So, please pardon me for I must be truthfull. I have seen most of your work that you have shown in the past few months and to be honest haven’t really cared for most of them. Though most will disagree I’m certain but I judge art by the capacity it has to touch my soul. So on to “HOWTH HARBOR”.….……I love it, It brings on a feeling of deep peace and draws me into the harbor where I could almost smell the sea, roll gently with the waves, Somehow becoming more aware of life around me.…“HOWTH HARBOR” is Honest, Real, uncomplicated in it’s Beauty.….….Thank-You for sharing this painting with me.….…Sincerely,
P.A.C.E.

john Bilek says

I can almost feel the air in this picture.I love the texture that you give the pier, and crispness of the sky,and water!Fresh, yet weathered.

krissy says

wonderful!

Sean - Ireland says

Hi Burt liked the picture, a small suggestion we in Ireland spell Harbor ‘Harbour’ so ‘Howth Harbour’ would make your painting look even more authentic

Rama says

Interesting…I enjoyed the way you initially turned into a photographer and this idea is unique too…

Maggie says

Hi Burt

I think the picture is great so far but there is more to come? Perhaps if you made the sea a little darker with some reflection it will be even more 3D. Just a thought.

Kenetic says

Interesting concept: painting a photograph. I’m going to try it on a picture from a magazine and see how that turns out.

Michelle says

Startling, Burt! Gorgeous! Like you reframed the experience!

Linda says

And they say there is nothing new to discover, even in the arts .… well I think you have done it …who would ever of thought??? WOW … Keep up the great work … and here’s to “Q” Jumping!!!! The one word that runs through a great many of the comments is *amazing* … it truly fits.… Thanks for sharing Burt …

Gregoy Clifton says

You do have a unique concept for your artwork, it turned out beatifully. Would love to see more.

Emil-George says

Amazing, Burt! More to come?

Jaleel says

I think it is a reminder of our lives as we try to manifest things like Burt explains or in the movie the Secret. We often imagine what we want but forget to “paint” the the entire picture meaning ourselves, our children, family, our surroundings, all the elements of the senses, and whatever else we need to make the manifestation more energized with emotion/feeling to enhance or quicken its presentation to you. Ponder these ideas and share what you take from at as I have, thanks Burt for the concept and idea which I hop to use even better now. Because now more than ten minutes ago I know , like I know, like I know, I can do this… meaning change my life with intention, prayer, and receiving of that which I choose to manifest.

Damien says

Great. Love the vibrant colours in the renewed version.
Simple and unfussy.

It’s like the picture became clearer. Just like in life. You think you know and understand something very well, but as the years go by, you learn more and more, thus your view on life becomes more clear. Just like working with your lessons. Each time I re-listen to the videos and drink in the information, I have begun to re-paint my ideas about life and the part I play in it. For the past two years I have been re-inventing my Self, so to speak. Me thinks this Butterfly is about to soar! Thank you Burt!

KO says

I love it! Great technique :-)

Katalin says

Thank you Burt! Lovely pictures I like them. You did fantastic change on that picture just with a few colour it is true to life. If is this 20 years old picture can be change this wonderfull way everything what we want we can change just need to work on it. That is what I thinking.
Thank you Burt again!
