Modeling Towards Enlightenment 98

To continue our discussion on conscious modeling, let me tell you about how I used this technique as the foundation for my quest towards enlightenment.

My first brush with conscious modeling began in my youth, just after I had been discharged from the army. It was at this point that I figured out that enlightenment was my life’s purpose, and I was looking for a spiritual master to help me reach this goal.

In 1949, my strong intent led me to Paramahansa Yogananda — the great Indian swami who had introduced meditation and yoga to the West. I joined Yogananda’s Self Realization Fellowship, and took it upon myself to learn all I could from him in as short a space of time as possible.

yogananda

So I took his lessons, listened to his advice and sought his opinions as often as he would allow. This persistence increased my abilities and knowledge by leaps and bounds, but it was at this point that I began to realize something else:

Following Yogananda’s teachings gave me good results — but doing what he DID gave me incredible results.

Let me explain the second part of that sentence. Yogananda’s talent and wisdom were vast — so vast that his words alone would not have been enough to express everything.

So I decided to observe him, and pick up parts of his behaviour, actions and mannerisms, in the hope that somehow, whether consciously or subconsciously, some of his unspoken talent and wisdom would rub off on me.

And they did! I modeled his methods of interacting with people, his posture when meditating, his daily routine… and within a matter of weeks, I was experiencing breakthroughs I once never thought possible.

And that was the first time I experienced firsthand the power of conscious modeling.

In some ways, it was a total perception shift compared to what I’d previously learned. Because while disciplines like meditation are all about looking inward, conscious modeling involved looking outward at others.

It was clear to me at that point — to unleash the unrealized potential within you, you first need to observe and emulate the realized potential radiating from others.

Ever since then I’ve continued to use this incredibly effective technique on those I can learn from, including visionaries like Jose Silva, the founder of the Silva Method. As you may know I am a certified Silva instructor, and spent years working with Jose and his organization to help spread his teachings.

There is no doubt in my mind that it was modeling these great gurus that helped me discover my potential and begin spreading my message of enlightenment to the world.

Now that I’ve shared with you how I have used conscious modeling to emulate the success of those I admire most, I would like to hear your thoughts:

Who would you most like to consciously model, and why? (It doesn’t have to be a famous person, even your neighbour or co-worker can be a role model!)

Dear Burt,

I feel so blessed that God keeps sending people in my life as my role model in deep prayer which now we called meditation.

It started in early years after I graduated in college when I studied special cours on religious studies. It was part of our formation to pray for 1 hour silent prayer/or meditation to develop our spiritual life goes with academic and work or ministry, for one year and one and two summer.

After this formation, I worked as pastoral worker in Muslim area in my country, Philippines where my Bishop and other religious missionary that I worked with involved in contemplative prayer or even applied the meditation techniques from Buddhist/Hindus tradition. The deep prayer life of the Muslims 5x a day sounded in the whole city creates a very contemplative atmospher plus the witnessing of the prayer life with all those I lived and workked with inspires me to continue in prayer.

When I arrived in Canada, I find it difficult to practice such intensity of prayer life which I believed was the reason of all sorts of crisis I had experienced during the first few years.

But, God continously pouring out His blessings to me in spite of my own limitation, that last summer I took a course under a lay professor who deepthness of his prayerlife/spirituality is similar to those people with whom I had been with who helped me to love to meditate. In our class prayer/meditation in Christian tradition is not popular in words but it is being lived out/practice that makes the class very life giving and people become more loving… THERE’S LIFE

To give credit to this professor (though he does not need it) Prof. Michael Hyrniuk shortly became my spiritual director. For some reason, we did not continue our meeting, but His modelling and influenced in my life evoked in me the gift that i already have but not thoroughly practice until I met him/ learned something from his witnessing about spirituality. With his influenced in my life I continoulsy doing my meditation.

Burt, your program and lessons, guidance and wisdom reinforced such experienced for I learned a lot from you Burt.

Burt, thank you so much for encouraging us to share our experience.

Have a Nice Evening

Burt,
how fortunate you were to be in Yogananda’s presence to have the blessing to model after him. I have been involved in Siddha Yoga for over 20 years and have followed the teachings of Gurumayi and Baba Muktananda. I recently became involved with Kriya yoga courses through Yogananda’s self realization fellowship. I listened to the Autobiography of a Yogi for at least a year non-stop, no radio, no TV, just the Autobiography. It was incredibile and I recommend that to anyone that really wants to open up the channels to see what is possible for each and every one of us. I have been in the presence of Gurumayi for 2 intensives, but I feel like I am her and she is me. So I can just imagine how wonderful it was to be with your Guru on a consistent basis. Yes, you are so correct, by following and believing the deep teachings of the self through enlightened beings does make everything so much easier. Thank you for sharing.

First of all, Jesus for obvious reason’s, but also my 20 month old great grandson.
He is so sweet and pure, unbiased, not a prejudice bone in his body, and he does not know how to hate.
He gives unconditional love, and is full of learning, playing, and laughter. That’s what I want is to
be able to love unconditionally, and to always be full of learning, laughter and playfulness. He is so innocent, which I believe is the essence of who we all are. Think about it, we were all born innocent, some one had to teach us how to be who we are now. I just want to go back to the innocents, the purity. He is so genuinely happy, and most of the time for no reason, just because he’s so innocent and doesn’t know any thing else yet.

Heide says

Hi Burt,
being an conscious being of spirit has started when I was 24 years old. In this time, I lived in the south of France, in a community, buildet by an ancient priest, who has served the pope in rome. He gave me the book to read:
The life of the Masters,..from Baird T. Spalding.
This was my opening. And the real first contact with the Christ…Love every-body…
This is a big deal, and do not knowing myself, I loved and loved and loved, and forgived every-bodies.
But not me,.…..
Than latest, after another relationship was falling down, the last lover told me, that I‘ve to love myself.
What a big deal. Where to start? Being good to myself, loving myself. Looking inside, there is a big whole, going deeper and deeper, larger, wider. Infinity,..waow..
And where I am? How can I tell, that the I exist?
By being form, I am a reflection (mirroir) of all around me. And the Other‘s are me.
All the great teachers who are teaching Love are my teachers, children‘s and innocence,–everybody can give, if my ears and eyes are wide enough opened.
I wish that this earth-familie wake up from their dream– to be this body, that they stop to kill themself, by ignorence.
That the value of life itself will be greater as the material.
That, it is no more the having, but the being the most important.

Time spent with the Paramhansa Yogananda must have undoubtedly benefitted you. And taking him as a role model and emulating him must have done you quite good.
But at this time I remember the great spiritual master, Osho saying “Do what your guru says. Never copy what he does.” And I want to go with that quote. Let me give you an example. Suppose you stayed with a doctor for a couple of years and worked according to his advice. Surely in a couple of years you would know a thing or two about medicinal practice. Then one day you decided to emulate the doctor and started doing the practice as he used to do. Does this make you a doctor? Rather than making you a doctor it would create a false sense of self. Having someone as a role model makes life easy to some extent. But it will not liberate you. And every human on this planet wants liberation. For liberation, self realisation is the one and only way. And this can only be achieved in deep state of meditation. The great Paramhansa Yogananda was a great exponent of it and you were very lucky to have personally interacted and practiced under his guidance. But emulating him as a role model did not make you as liberated as Paramhansa Yogananda. Or did it?

Rick Garzaniti says

Children are my role models. Although I do not consciously model their actions, I strive to emulate (perhaps “remember” would be more appropriate) their innocence, their curiosity, and their love for everyone. I thoroughly enjoy watching them experience something for the first time, listening to the questions they ask and the comments they make. They are living this life as if everything is brand new! Simply knowing that these kids might actually be taking care of me 20 years from now only increases the love and heartfelt gratitude I have for them.

Anita says

So many beautiful answers.
For me I also see everybody and everything as a mirror. All is an aspect of me also. I always (want to) see myself in the other and see the other in me.
I use ‘other selfs’ as examples (quantum jumping). I use Burt, Jesus, Boedha, my best friend Monique. Bob Doyle, Sasha Xarrian, Helen Hadsell. My daughter, ‘my’ cat’s. “Logging in”, yes.
I use All that is, myself included.

Thanks!
Anita.

Shankar says

I feel the question is not all-inclusive. i have many role models. What I do is to log on to the spiritual energy field of a model and try to emulate a certain quality. For another quality, I log on to another role model. Hindu scriptures have a Sanskrit word for “logging in” — avahana. Here, we invite another energy field — for a temporary period — into our energy field and “gather” whatever is needed.

Hi all,

I have read a lot of your posts (apologies for not reading all — time). I fear some of us may have missed Burt’s point. I don’t think he is talking about finding a role model and aspiring to be like them. Burt’s point (correct me if I’m wrong please Burt) is that in the presence of the people we admire we should copy/adopt/mirror their exact body language and then use the same movements/mannerisms in other areas of our lives. In a relatively short time using your body exactly the same way that they do will generate the same feelings, insights, skills or successes of those whom we are modeling. Just keep a clear, open and playful mind and all will happen magically.

To all

Good luck being you.

Thanks Burt for your messages and your efforts to spread enlightenment throughout the world. I have had a notion about something different within me for most of my life. I have had these feelings that there is something I know but, I don’t know what it is that I know. I’m 55 yrs old now and when I was 22, I read the Third Eye by Lopsang Rampa and met someone who introduced me to a new way of understanding the universe. Since then I’ve continued to search and have come across Deepak Chopra, Dr. Wayne Dyre, Eckhart Tolle, Jane Roberts, Karen Bishop, Dr. Eric Pearl and have tried to study the I Ching. What you have presented in your latest program of Quantum Jumping is an awesome opportunity for me to experience what I have always been looking for. I hope this is the model that will propel me into achieving the ability to learn techniques and to heal so that I can give back and share with people who need the help.

Hi Burt happy easter. My role model is the Holy family. I can’t think of any one.I can’t even meditate deep.I don’t know if I have to have a teacher. What do you think?

Teresa T. says

I don’t have one.…I can’t think of any one person. There are a lot of people I admire and wish I had there knowledge but no one person I would like to model after.…it would have to be Jesus.…because he walked from his heart and spirit.…I endeavour to be the best person I can be and practise his teachings and principles.

James Shelton says

I honest to God only wanna be me and that is all.If i had any asperations to be like anybody it would be maybe harrison ford for his boldness, bob dylan for his will to never give up on his dreams and goals,Jesus for his ways of teaching the world how to succeed and lastly a train or plane driver who actually can get me to LA where I so want to be.Want is not bad it’s also a variation of desire and lust as well i still am confused.words can even intersect. It all still baffles me.I mean i studied many numerous belief even the hindus and still am baffled and even Christian books and still haven’t fully discovered the Mysteries of Christ.Well maybe I have, yet my life I so want to make it better I mean ain’t supposed to live each day to it’s fullest ain’t that God’s own wish for me.If so how is that even possible if pessimism is still in my mind and how can i rid of it and still get the girl that i love.i’d do anything for her absolutely anything, yet sadly i am unemployed work online and my bishop mistreats me.maybe i should change my email sadly i may because it is getting out of hand.all i care about in the world is this girl,God and achieving my dreams and helping others too.

Pranab says

It is great that you got inspiration from Paramahansa Yogananda. For me till now I am inclined to any body to be very frank. Some say, life actually starts with death. Also, people say present life is nothing more than a dream, either sweet or bitter. In India there are many spiritual gurus who teach things like Knowing Thyself through meditation,Bhakti Yoga,Karma Yoga all different approach concerning a primary motive-Self Realisation,Knowing thyself. The system seems to be a tough one,and that living a normal life it is not possible to attain that level of self realisation,me to no different.

Many aspects of knowing higher-self, like knowing the candle [ 3 1/2 coil called kundalani in Indian culture ] residing at the base of spine capable to produce vibratory awareness and bring one close to the universal oneness, waiting to be lit by a empowered master. I experienced that. This is self relisation. But what is next? Will exploring sub conscious mind, experiencing out of body experience can bring us close to God or knowing that super natural power can pave the way where there is no question of return to this world-THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF ALL GURUS and we comman man.

My Grandmother Ruby was and has been an inspiration to me. She was crippled from Polo and was raised in a Charity Hospital for Children for 14 yrs. She had the ability to sleep while floating on water, like on a pond or a lake. She saw the world as unchanging, from generation to generation we humans remain the sameshe would tell me. It is only how we look at life that changes the focus of our lives. With my new personal growth of moving to a more complete life within myself. I will use Ruby and my new knowledge of the inner workings of my mind to help create a new view of the world for myself and others to enjoy.

Well role models sure but hero worshipping no that is what I always thought after seeing the gurus and saints trying to emulate GOD.
I sincerely feel that whatever a person is trying to become should not come out from a sense of incompleteness. We need to thank GOD for creating us the way we are. At the same time nothing should deter us from a path of higher consciousness.
My role models are people who are artist, scientist, healers, visionaries and thinkers. I really admire people like Van Goh, Michelengelo, Leonardo Da vinci who had were bestowed with artistic and scientific skills.

Hi Burt,

Role Modeling, hum, That would be a tough questions if you never thought about it. I remember once a long time ago a teacher asked a question ” How do you want to make your mark in this world”. I think that is a powerful question that has stuck with me through the years. There are many. I can stay, I can create and make goals, look up to other people characters and even humanitarians, Yogananda and many many more. But, I being a mother had to be the best role model, to set the example, to encourage, to allow them to dream and believe in themselves and find their own path in life. I to have had just everday people, sometimes I think angels come from nowhere to help guide and direct me. It may even come in the form of dreams and instincts. I had to be intuned and opened minded. You got to look deep within your soul, maybe even deeper, and ask yourself, what do you want! Some of you may not even know how to do that. If you died today and your whole life flashed before you, and I mean everything, good and bad.Do you like what you see, if not, then start changing. Know that will comes with peace within you. You only get one life here, dream it and create it, make it happen…I am still a work in progress. No I am not rich, a single mother who barely at times could make ends meet. A lot of hard times. A lot of my childhood dreams are still waiting in me, and still a part of me. I never let the inner child go and I never let the bad things of this world get in me. My children are my life, (well now they are all grown up) so now I am faced with the chanlenge of finally saying I’m still not to old to follow my inner child goals, dreams… whatever, just make the first step.
Burt is a great example, see your never to old or young in this life, but it’s the here and now, when you wake up today, how do you want your day be? Regardless, look at no obsticles, focus on the end results and know at the end of the day, you’ll hopefully say “WOW” I did that!
Burt you like some many others in the past, keeps me alive and knowing there is alway more. Even though, I know I am not along, but I do have to say, my everyday life. I do feel all alone, on a qwest and journey kinda like that movie “Fantashia” and all along the answers were inside. Thank you

Jesus i want to model, he is sinless, kind to others heals and is strong and a much bigger reason also.

Master parks, he, although i dont know him personally is similar to a good freind of mine, he teaches some of my favorate martial arts and is a strong follower of God.

Gerral O’donnal, he is a powerful teacher with un– surpassed methods of remote veiwing and similar meditations.

Burt Goldman, you, i seem already similar to although i could model my meditations after you also so i could indeed get better and better.

I dont feel so much better and better…i only feel minor better and i have been doing this for almost 3 months… i assume the freebies arent as good as the ourchase product..

Strength, is a special word a word with no definition to be put into a sentence. It is just a word you learn yourself one day it just comnes to you and you dont know the definition. You feel strength you cannot recite its definition.

wdonerful by the way burt , great knowledge.

Hi Burt,
My Guru is Paramanhansa Yogananda, and I practice Kriya Yoga. Since your enlightenment came from him, you are my role model!

Rosie says

I don’t have one specific role model. I learn from every thing and all beings. So that means that I pick and choose what I feel is good for me, in a given situation. The rest I discard while I am learning what I need to know. My curiosity to get the best of all, guides me towards what I am looking for at that specific moment. For me, life in itself is my inspiration and my daily encounters are what gives me the energy to go on every day.
This does not mean that I do not have my interest and goals. That is different from the richness I find every instant I have. So as you, Burt I am trying my best to get all I can now and replenish. My next step will probably start pretty soon, and is to start giving what I have been able to grasp through life and also keep replenishing in a different way in order to give some more.

Linda says

OK so I ran across a book of his in the library and loved his message, but I wanted to learn more. If you join his institute or fellowship you have to sign something that says you won’t share it, or teach it. How did you get around that?

All I have to do is take a Quantum Jump in one of my infinite dimensions to meet the role model I want advice from.

But then, knowing you as my greatest teacher ever, you don’t make a bad role model yourself either ;-)

In looking for models, one may pick the characteristic you want or need, and take your modelling from many: Tony Robbins writes about this, and I do believe it has been useful to me. Unknowingly, as a young child, I used this. I wouldn’t have had any names for it, but I trusted myself intuitively in this to find models who acted the way I wanted and felt I needed to be. Teachers, classmates, neighbors, people on TV and in movies were wonderful models. I didn’t need to know or impugn or second guess their or mine motives, just capture the essence and put on the demeanor. Acting as if really works!!

Hi Burt,

In my quest for spiritual enlightenment, I have read many books, attended seminars and listened to countless tapes, but I always though that being able to consciously emulate someone who had already achieved the things I was aiming for would greatly accelerate my own journey.

I must say that right now, the best spiritual/ law of attraction/ living your purpose teacher I have met is you. All of a sudden, things and concepts I was struggling with are becoming clearer, and I’m feeling a lot more confident.

So, if there is one person I would want to consciously model after right now, it is you. You embody the dream I have for myself, the person I dream to become.

Daryl Quintanilla says

The person I would model is respoensible for becoming enlightened on his own, mostly. He felt he had a calling and decided that helping people was his mission in life. I first heard about him and his organization at at early age, his name and his mission intrigued me and stayed with me for years…It was much later in life, when I really needed his advice, his consul and his contribution to my well being that his organizations website appeared on my screen. Since then, I could list the improvements in my life, but it would sound like a commercial, his name is Jose Silva from Laredo, Texas.

Hey Burt, this is great stuff. As a man, I think real masculine role models are few and far between. What do I mean? Well, to me a real man is both strong AND gentle. The best example I saw of this was in the movie La Vie En Rose — the story of Edith Piaf the French singer. She had an affair with a French boxer at the time, this would have been the late 40’s I think. His name was Marcel Cerdan, and there are scenes of them together in the movie, like when he took her to a real nice upmarket restaurant in New York. My point is that he was this really tough guy who dominated the ring — he even fought Raging Bull Jake La Motta — but he treated her like a lady. Here he was, this big strong guy, yet aesthetic, well-dressed, and handsome — refined, educated, and treated women and children with respect and tenderness. So I have been inspired by his example and try to emulate the blend of power and gentleness — even tho I don’t know him personally.

PS I know some will slam him for having had an affair but you have to take into account that this is not a ‘sin’ in French culture.

Robin says

I my quest for enlightenment and personal peace/happiness That has just started a mere 6 months ago. I am leaning so much that one particular person as a role model would be great but with my commitment to the Silva method and subsequently or as a result the my attempts to use the Quantum jumping as support. My previous readings of Dr Wayne Dyer, Tony Robbins, The secret, and many other self enlightenment books and theories. As I try to practice the best and common ground that all these present am still sorting out the correct methods for me. I have had limited success at present and when I have a clear direction and understanding will then adapt a mentor ship routine.

Hi Burt:

Awesome thinking! My role model is an individual that inspires me. He always has a suggestive motive to inivate me with positive thinking and goal setting. Understanding the true meaning of living life on life terms. He is well respected in the community and always helping others, and he is the true meaning of a visionary. Sometimes people come into our path for a reason and we mistakenly consider them as a role model. As time goes on we try to follow their path and find out later that he/she is not the person we want to model after all. I am saying this to say that I have found a true role model in my life.

Sometimes he borrows the morphic fields of his teachers, sometimes he borrows the morphic fields of really incredible people he knows, like John of God, and sometimes he borrows the morphic fields of fictional characters. In the latter case, his first experience doing that was having Superman show him where the problem was inside a child’s head in order to correct Lazy Eye. Having read all the blogs here, I have to agree with you and all the people here. We all have someone we would love to be like. I love Anastasia from Russia, I wish I could have some of her gift. Only recently I have been finding myself with true passion and purpose in life and I look to people like Oprah or Barbara Walters or my friend Amira when I start to wane in my enthusiasum for my quest. Each of these people display patience, courage and compassion for others, all the while achieving their said goals.
Regards
Noelle

Anastasia the woman who lives in the taiga woolds of rusia the one who Vladimir Megre write about. Why? She is in my opinion the Jesus in woman form. That’s what i wanne become.

I’ve noticed the general idea instructed is to choose one “role-model”. Then again, isn’t it possible to look up to a few? For not everything in one role-model is always acceptble and found worthy of emulating — moreover, if we actually evaluate each and every “candidate” role-model and filter their virtues and vices, aren’t we actually looking within somehow at the end of the day? Trying to creat somewhat of a “super role-model”? Then remains the question, isn’t this image in our heads a product of exterior influences after all.

I agree with you totally Burt. Having the opportunity to watch and learn from someone who seems to you to have got it right is an eye-opening experience. One of my son’s coaches was the person in my life I truly wanted to emulate. It was some kind of charisma and control of self that I had never had the chance to observe in real life before.
How great for you to have had that chance with Paramhansa Yogananda.

Kalpana says

Hello Burt,
You are one of the truly blessed and lucky people to have met Yogananda…to have learnt from him!!!
I do try and model my Guru’s (Shri Kripalvanandaji — who went into Samadhi 25 yrs ago. He was the epitome of love — just sitting in his presence one would be enveloped by pure love! I can still feel that love whenever I feel sad and remember him and talk with him!
I would love to be able to love one and all –but I find that I am not able to do so! There are a few people who I just cannot even like, the thought of those people also makes me bitter and angry!
I understand intellectually that everyone is connected, we are one, etc but I am not able to practice that knowledge!
At the same time, I must also say that I have become a little better than what I used to be. So, there is still hope :-)

The funny thing with me is that all my role models are fictional characters from movies, comics, TV etc…

here is a short list of some of my role models (you may laugh lol) Qui gon Jin a Jedi from star wars, Aragorn from lord of the rings, Batman and Doctor Who.

i wonder if the conscious model thing works with them too?
